Your air filter performs two very important jobs for your car:
Protecting the engine from contaminants.
Providing clean air for the engine.
Contaminants in the air can damage engine parts. The air filter traps dust, dirt, and microscopic exhaust particles and keeps them from entering your engine.
For every gallon of gasoline it burns, your engine uses about 12,000 gallons of outside air. Your air filter cleans all of it. It allows enough air in to keep your engine running at peak levels and to ensure it's best performance. By leaving a dirty air filter to do the job, you're accepting lower performance, and wasted economy (lost fuel). Also, when an air filter becomes saturated with dirt, some dirt will get sucked through the filter and enter your engine. This dirt and dust is abrasive to the cylinder walls, and with each piston stroke, causes more and more damage.
Why replace a dirty air filters with a clean one?

As a part of our Full Service, Oil Express technicians will inspect your air filter. If your filter is dirty, he will show you your filter, and advise you of the replacement cost so you can decide whether or not to have us replace it.
A clean air filter helps to improve gas mileage, provide smoother acceleration, and extend engine life. Airborne dust is the largest source of abrasives found inside engines. When your air filter gets too dirty, particles of dust are sucked through the filter, and end up inside your cylinders. As your pistons move up and down they squeeze these particles between the piston rings and cylinder walls causing scratches that lead to lost fuel economy, lost power, and oil usage. Motor oil grabs theses particles and as the oil is moved through the oil filter, it traps the dust to prevent further damage. By changing your air filter regularly (about every 12,000 miles) you not only save fuel, but you also increase the life of your engine. When you inspect your air filter and find dirt hidden in the folds, it is time to replace the filter. Blowing out air filters, or banging them on the floor, may clean hidden dirt from the media, however it also damages the media which will lead to even more dust contamination of your engine.
